Loreto is one of the most important Marian Centre in Italy, the only place where You may find "The real heart of the Virgin Mary" as the Pope Giovanni Paolo II said.
An ancient tradition reports that the Holy House of Loreto is the same room of the one in Nazareth, in Galilea, and here Mary was born, was educated and received the angelic announcement.

Ricoperta all'esterno dal mirabile rivestimento marmoreo progettato dal Bramante, si trova sotto la cupola del Sangallo entro la grande basilica (metri 95 x 69) costruita a partire dal 1468 dai migliori architetti del Papa.
The Piazza is bounded by the façade of the Basilica, by the Apostolic Palace and the Illyric Palace.
The present façade was designed by Giovanni Boccalini in 1571. Boccalini personally directed the work of construction as far as the lower cornice, operations were then continued under the direction of G. Battista Ghioldi and the facade was completed in 1587. |
On the left side of the Basilica stands the monument to Pope Sixtus V. The monument is the work of Calcagni with the assistance of the Vergelli.
In the middle of the Piazza stands the Fountain of the Blessed Virgin, designed by Carlo Maderno and Giovanni Fontana.
The bell tower is the work of Luigi Vanvitelli in 1750.
The Illyric Palace, designed by Giuseppe Marini (1831) today provide suitable accommodation for the sick pilgrims who come to Loreto. |
